Overview

Our English Language Programs are designed to strengthen and advance the English language capacities of those who speak English as an additional language, facilitating students’ and scholars’ academic and professional success at the University and beyond.

Our Offerings

The English Language Program (ELP) within University College is an Academic and Professional English program specifically designed for students and scholars  who speak English as an additional language. ELP offers courses, support, and assessment in academic and professional English language.

Courses

Improve your English language skills by taking a course about writing, conversation, or presentation skills. English Language Programs offers courses in research writing for the sciences, social sciences, and humanities as well as courses in discussion and casual conversation to build skills. Individual Supports

You can also develop your English language skills through individual supports: tutorials, appointments, and small group sessions with an English language professional. Learn more about our individual supports.

Our Assessments

English Language Programs also offers two assessments for Washington University programs: Incoming Placement Assessments and Instructional Readiness Assessments. Students are identified to take these exams by the Graduate School and their home departments.

These assessments are designed to identify students who might benefit from English language courses throughout their time at Washington University in St. Louis. Learn more about our assessments.
